This is a video installation commissioned in 2014 by the Loveland Museum and Gallery in Loveland, Colorado. The museum gave me two historic items as inspiration: a sugar beet knife and bricks from the sugar beet plant. The video is a surreal collage of vintage footage from actual sugar beet workers in the 1920's in Colorado as well as sugar cane workers. I also used some of my own footage shot on location at the Loveland Museum and the local sugar beet plant. I used several different digital techniques and stop motion to create three distinct interpretations of the history of sugar and the sugar beet. The sound track is a collection of sound bytes from Sugar Crisp commercials and other sources, as well as my own work in Logic Pro.
